Students With A Quality And Equitable Education - 2070 Words

It is essential that all schools pursue and uphold principles of social justice if our education system is to provide all students with a quality and equitable education’. There is a plethora of empirical evidence suggesting that the education system is failing to meet the social justice needs of a growing minority of students. ( iAustralian Bureau of Statistics, 1997, iiBuckingham 1999, iiiLuke Freebody 1999, ivMCEETYA, (2001) The system is failing three main groups of students, these being lower class / Socioeconomic students, rural students and Language Backgrounds Other Than English students (LBOTE). These groups are handicapped by the educational system because of their rurality, their class/socioeconomic status, or because the students haven’t developed the appropriate cultural capital. In addressing the social justice issues that these three groups have, I will consider why these areas disadvantage each group; how the school could implement an effective support process that would provide a more equitable education to all students; and identify and implement appropriate strategies that would ensure an equitable education that enhances social justice within the class room. To consider how these groups are disadvantaged, we need to understand the meanings of cultural capital, social justice, socioeconomic status, equity and rurality. vSilva Edwards (2004) see cultural capital as the norms, values and understanding that people hold.
